California’s teaching workforce does not reflect our incredibly vibrant and diverse student population. Beatrice Viramontes from Teach for America will share some best practices in their approach to intentionally diversify their teaching force, one that is increasingly representative of the students that they serve.
Next, Dr. Travis Bristol will discuss his research on the added value of Latinx and Black teachers and the call to action school board members and policy makers can adopt. Dr. Bristol is an Assistant Professor of education at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including Urban Education, the American Educational Research Journal, the Journal of Teacher Education, and Teachers College Record.
